Types

In general, you can choose either vinyl sheet or vinyl tile for your room. Sheet vinyl works best in large rooms while tiles are more for do-it-yourself installation for smaller rooms. Either options allow you to choose from an array of colours and patterns that mimic stone, ceramic, or even metallic elements. Remember though, choosing sheet or tile vinyl is more of a personal preference rather than anything else.

Having said that, we still highlight the minor differences for your consideration here.

Vinyl Sheet: It comes in rolls measuring 6′ or 12′ wide so that you can cover large rooms quickly. There are two different kinds of sheet vinyl, inlaid and rotogravure. Inlaid sheet requires a larger upfront investment with higher durability. It also features a colour pattern that goes all the way through the entire sheet. Rotogravure is a more economical choice that consists of a foam base that is printed with ink and covered with a wear layer.

You may also select a type of backing. The most common option is felt-backed sheet. It features a felt layer that adds strength and cushion. It requires the entire floor to be covered with adhesive. Vinyl-backed sheets are glued at the edges and are generally professionally installed. Modified loose-lay sheets feature a fiberglass backing that adds strength and stability, but doesn’t require adhesive and is the easiest to install.

Vinyl Tile: It comes in 12-inch squares with adhesive backing. To hold a longer period of time, you can choose a ticker tile. Installation of vinyl tile is a typical DIY project especially when the room is small.

One thing to take note, make sure all of the tiles you purchase are from the same dye lot. The colour and pattern of vinyl tile is determined by dye lots. While other lots may be labeled as being the same pattern and colour, slight differences in shade may occur.

Wear Layer

To ensure high-quality, long-lasting performance, you need to consider wear layer. Thicker layers tend to provide better protection. Though the initial cost is higher, the increased durability can save you money in the long run.

The wear layer is crucial to ensuring the longevity of vinyl flooring, helping to protect the surface and enabling it to withstand scuffs, dents, scrapes and stains.
